NHS trust introduces Hidden Talents programme to aid employees with disabilities

THE LANCASHIRE and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust (LSCft) has introduced a new programme to aid its employees with a disability.

The new initiative named the Hidden Talents programme was launched with an inclusive event at the Championship Football club, Preston North End.

After receiving funding from NHS England, the launch coincides with Disability History Month (16th November 2022 to 16th December 2022).

Hidden Talents is a development and career progression programme for staff with disability at LSCft, as well as there is a select number of places open to the local disabled community.

The inaugural disability event, which attracted 50 guests, showcased the abilities of people with disabilities and their professional advancement, growth, and employment.

Jo Harrison, manager of diversity and inclusion, and Maria Nelligan, executive sponsor of the Disability and Long Term Conditions Network, gave an overview of the programme to start things off.

Throughout the day, attendees were encouraged to share their own stories; it was conducted either anonymously using an interactive app or in front of the group during one of the open conversations that took place.

All participants were given the opportunity to express their desire in having a career conversation, and LSCft staff members were asked to sign up to become Hidden Talent facilitators who will be trained on how to have career talks with community members and disabled employees.

Jo Harrison, manager of Diversity and Inclusion said: “We are very excited to deliver a programme for disabled staff and members of the local disabled community.

“Designed in collaboration with the Trusts’ Disability and Long Term Conditions Staff Network, the programme will support individuals in becoming confident and motivated to develop and progress their careers or look for employment in the NHS.”

It is intended to assist career discussions for those who want to advance in their current jobs or are searching for work in the NHS and is funded for six months.

The LSCft Disability and Long Term Conditions Network, which actively encourages workers to be their best selves and have fair access to career development opportunities, support the initiative.
