A NEW set of guidelines has been released by the British Standards Institution (BSI), a national standards agency, to assist firms in developing an inclusive and diverse working culture.
The code of practise for diversity, equality, and inclusion in the workplace, PAS 1948, was created to offer businesses practical assistance in creating and implementing a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) framework.
It is aimed towards businesses in all sectors and applies to traditional offices, industrial settings, and workplaces like zoos, sports arenas, or movie sets. It is sponsored by the All-In Diversity Project*.
Understanding and putting into practice ideas like variety of thinking, diversity in its aspects, intercultural competency, and cognitive diversity are all covered by this new guideline.
Additionally, it discusses how to implement inclusive by design into services, technology, business models, and processes, how organisations can address behaviour that is inconsistent with DEI principles, and how to engage and support underrepresented social and cultural groups.
Kate Field, global head of health, safety, and wellbeing at BSI, said: “A diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace culture that prioritises people has the potential to be transformative for individuals, organisations, and society.
“This starts with leadership taking steps to turn ambition into action to build and sustain DEI across their organisation.
“Seeing DEI as a valuable investment in people and the future of your organisation can offer huge benefits, including in attracting and retaining the very best talent and skills which in turn has the potential to support innovation, customer insight engagement and improve performance.”
Other focus areas include determining the right DEI learning and development requirements, developing inclusive brands, customer engagement, and workplace culture, incorporating DEI principles into an organisation’s internal policies, practises, and processes, determining the organisational benefits of establishing and maintaining an effective DEI culture, setting realistic goals and objectives, and tracking progress.
