Magic Circle law firm announces it’s ‘most diverse ever partnership’ with 41 per cent women lawyers

CLIFFORD CHANCE, the Magic Circle law firm has announced its promotion of 37 lawyers to the partnership recently.

Women partners make up 41 per cent (15 of 37) making it the most diverse ever partnership and the largest one since 2007.

According to the firm, the rolling average of 37 per cent over five years is also the highest to date. The firm has a target of at least 40 per cent female and at least 40 per cent male global partners in the firm by 2030.

Matthew Layton, Global Managing Partner commented, “These promotions are a key milestone in careers that have been defined by talent, commitment and entrepreneurialism. Everyone joining the partnership has become a “go-to” adviser for many of the world’s most influential organisations on their strategically critical opportunities and challenges. As well as congratulating them on their success to date, I hope the rest of their careers can be as rich and rewarding as mine has been at the firm.”

The firm has also revealed that 23 per cent (5) of the 21 new US and UK partners have disclosed ethnicity identified as people of colour exceeding the firm’s target of 15 per cent of new partners by 2025 for the second year running.

Jeroen Ouwehand, Global Senior Partner, commented, “As well as being the largest new round of partners since 2007, this is our most diverse ever. Together, they embody our uncompromising pursuit of excellence, and our ambitious goals to build a law firm where everyone can see they have a fair chance to reach the top of the profession.”

Vast majority of the new partners (34) work with financial investor clients, which it described as a ‘key growth priority’. Such clients, which include private equity, funds, and real estate investors, grew from 26 per cent (£355m) to 33per cent (£612m) of its revenue between 2015 and 2021.

Last year, the firm has promoted 29 lawyers with 11 women partners.
