IN A significant move, the International Bar Association (IBA) has unveiled its Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) Toolkit – a comprehensive set of guidelines aimed at assisting law firms integrating essential diversity and inclusion principles.

Originally spearheaded by the IBA European Regional Forum Diversity & Inclusion Working Group, the initiative has now expanded globally to ensure relevance across different jurisdictions. The IBA Diversity & Inclusion Council has officially endorsed this initiative.

It is positioned as a practical resource applicable to law firms of all sizes and locations.

It will serve as a guide for those developing D&I strategies, enhancing existing practices, or reviewing internal policies to ensure comprehensive coverage.

Masako Banno, Chair of the IBA Diversity and Inclusion Council said: “It has been inspiring to see the IBA European Regional Forum take the lead on this important issue, encouraging all law firms to embrace a more diverse and equal workplace environment.

“The Diversity & Inclusion Council welcomes, and will continue to support, the initiative, and we hope that this resource will assist a wide range of law firms in making diversity and inclusion a core element of their business model.”

Through the toolkit, practitioners can learn how to match their goals with the business plan of their organisation and start important dialogues about diversity and inclusion.

The toolbox includes a matrix that is customised to employees’ career milestones to help organisations identify activities and best practises.

The matrix covers topics like hiring and attraction, onboarding, career advancement, and ending professional relationships.

This programme is a major step towards encouraging inclusion and diversity in the legal industry.
