PRIDE Month is celebrated around the world and started on June 28, 1969, when New York City police attacked the Stonewall Inn, in Greenwich Village, Manhattan, a homosexual club.
It set off the Stonewall riots, which eventually resulted in the foundation of LGBTQ+ rights campaign and anti-discrimination initiatives.
The location of the Stonewall Inn was a well-liked hangout for young homosexual males, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgender individuals.
Police beat up several customers as they cleared the pub and detained employees for selling alcohol without a license.
The LGBTQ+ community staged a number of protests against the raid and demanded the creation of safe spaces where gay people could gather without worrying about being detained or become the targets of violence.
Since then, the LGBTQ+ community has commemorated the decades-long fight for equal rights yearly.
Many events, parades, and festivals are happening and beyond across the world.
London, United Kingdom: The Pride March will be on July 2 in London, which is anticipated to be the biggest parade in the UK and will be the main event this year.
The first recognised UK Gay Pride Rally took place in London on July 1, 1972 (chosen as the nearest Saturday to the anniversary of the Stonewall riots of 1969). This year Pride in London is marking the 50th year since the UK’s first Pride parade.
The Pride in London website says: “The campaign for 2022 will commemorate the past 50 years and our evolution as a movement; acknowledging those torch bearers who have come before us and their achievements. As we celebrate and look forward to the next 50 years, we’ll recognise the challenges still faced by our community nationally and globally.
“Participation in the parade gives the opportunity for expression of celebration, joy and triumph but also the voice to rightly express the continued fight for those injustices and inequalities that exist amongst us.”
It will be held from Marble Arch to Embankment through Park Lane and Piccadilly in London. The parade’s slogan is “Visibility, Unity, and Equality.”
Many UK cities, including Bristol, Manchester, and Brighton, have flown rainbow flags.
