Diversity language being used more by companies in US job postings

THIS YEAR, US-based companies included more terms about diversity initiatives in job postings, in a sign, that firms are withstanding pressure to pare back on their equity, diversity, and inclusion programmes.

In the first half of 2023, 12 per cent of US job postings used the word “equity,” up from 10.1 per cent the previous year, according to research by Textio, a company that aims to assist businesses in creating objective employment advertisements.

There was a one per cent increase in “diversity” mentions to 31.6 per cent of US job posts.

According to Kieran Snyder, CEO of Seattle-based Textio, businesses are increasingly looking for diverse employees due to the economic benefits of having a team that reflects the entire population.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) also influences many job responsibilities, such as the requirement for inclusive marketing.

The changes in hiring terminology come despite mounting pressure on Businesses to abandon EDI programmes, particularly in light of the Supreme Court’s decision to ban affirmative action in higher education and the subsequent worries about policy spillovers.

“The reality for most businesses is that their customer bases are becoming more diverse, especially racially,” Snyder said.

“If you don’t have a team that represents your customer demographics, you make products that don’t serve your customers. If you don’t serve your customers, you go out of business.”

A reckoning has occurred at several businesses as a result of the US High Court judgement, with CEOs considering how the decision may affect their own goals.

Conservatives and Republican legislators are putting more pressure on The Fortune 100 CEOs to reconsider their claimed diversity goals in a letter that was sent to them shortly after the court verdict.

The rhetoric in the wake of George Floyd’s death in 2020, when Businesses hurried to express their commitment to Social Responsibility, has changed in tone.

The 6.6 million job postings made by US corporations in 2022 and the 5.6 million listings made in 2023 were compared by Textio.
