PRIDE in London has received a five-year financing deal today (18) to support the organisation of the capital’s renowned LGBTQ+ events.
Sadiq Khan, the Mayor of London, said he was “delighted” to announce that Pride in London would receive funding for an additional five years.
The community organisation will receive up to £625,000 in city funding to stage its events for the next five years (2023-2027).
Following a competitive open bidding procedure, Pride in London was selected and will utilise the cash to organise an inclusive parade through the heart of London as well as a diverse line-up of activities in Trafalgar Square.
An advisory panel composed of members from the LGBTQ+ community evaluated each bid.
Sadiq Khan said, “London is a beacon of inclusiveness around the world and that is in part due to the powerful impact that the Pride march of solidarity and celebration has had on our society over the last five decades”.
“Pride in London has set out ambitious plans to work closely with all LGBTQI+ communities to put on an inclusive event over the coming years and I’m looking forward to seeing this delivered”, he added.
The Mayor previously declared his continuous support for UK Black Pride and an LGBTQ+ reception at City Hall throughout the course of the same five years.
Christopher Joell-Deshields, executive director of Pride in London, said: “Pride in London is proud in this momentous year of celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first Pride in the UK to be awarded funding by City Hall. This will allow us to continue delivering the capital’s Pride parade from 2023.
“Our dedicated team of volunteers look forward to engaging with LGBTQ+ communities to build better, ensuring that our platform amplifies national and global LGBTQ+ issues, celebrates our communities’ successes and empowers LGBTQ+ individuals through our values of visibility, unity, and equality.
“We look forward to announcing the date for 2023 in the coming weeks.”
A key component of their financing request was the establishment of a Community Advisory Council to collaborate closely with LGBTQ+ communities, as well as a clear anti-racism strategy, and a stage for the trans community.
Additionally, the organisation has committed to establishing prizes to recognise community accomplishments.
Pride in London is an annual LGBTQ+ pride festival and parade held each summer in London, England.
It was founded in 1972. The event, which was formerly run by Pride London, is sometimes referred to as London Pride.
