A CONTINUING row in the US brings to light the sharp divisions that can sometimes arise from what look like simple marketing initiatives.
Bud Light, a beer brand under the Budweiser Group, is facing a fall in sales since the firm engaged the assistance of transgender celebrity Dylan Mulvaney in a marketing campaign a month ago, it has been claimed.
Dylan Mulvaney received a few drinks from Bud Light at the beginning of April. She responded by posting a video of herself dressed as Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany’s, drinking the beers in honour of March Madness and her first year as a woman.
Her image was on one of the cans. It was a funded sponsorship deal and promotion for some type of sweepstakes challenge where participants may win $15,000 (£11,924) from Bud Light by bringing in videos showing themselves carrying the brand’s beers.
Not merely because Holly Golightly loved the White Angel, Mulvaney’s transgender identity and association with herself infuriated some people.
Trans issues are at the heart of the contemporary cultural conflict in America. With targets including children, drag performances, driver’s licences, and health care, anti-trans sentiment is spreading quickly.
Although Mulvaney claimed she would avoid the conversations, she spoke up through a video message on Instagram in which she explains why she purposefully remained inactive for a few weeks following the scandal.
“I’m going to try to leave gender out of this, since that’s how we found ourselves here,” she said in the video.
Mulvaney said that some of the conversations around the collaboration were so far from her reality that she occasionally had no idea she was even being discussed.
She mentioned that because of her upbringing in a family that is conventional and the fact that they still uphold in her faith, both things assist her in these difficult circumstances.
“But what I’m struggling to understand is the need to dehumanise and to be cruel,” she said. “I don’t think that’s right. Dehumanisation has never fixed anything in history ever. And, you know, I’m embarrassed to even tell you this, but I was nervous that you were going to start believing those things that they were saying about me, since it is so loud. But I’m just gonna go ahead and trust that the people who know me and my heart won’t listen to that noise.”
Mulvaney made a joke that she would want to be reborn as “someone non-confrontational, and uncontroversial” in her next life.
